New To Spray Painting? - Learn With Water!
It’s easier than you think, but like all things new, understanding and a bit of practice goes a long way. I recommend practising with at least 10 litres of water and taking your time.
Water has a huge advantage over paint – you can make as many mistakes as you want without it costing you time and money!
The following instructions assumes you have already completed the previous steps and are ready to have a go.
Step 2 - Part 1
Fan Pattern
Turn the sprayer back on and adjust the pressure to about 900psi (this is enough for water).
Pull the trigger and start painting something… garage door, driveway, fence – it doesn’t matter, it’s only water.
You need to follow the fan pattern – spray up, down and sideways to get a feel for it.
To change the direction of the fan simply turn the tip holder 90°
Step 2 - Part 2
Distance
Spray tips have a size on them, eg: 517. The first number is really important – you must take the first number and double it (in this case 5 becomes 10).This gives you the size of the fan in inches, eg: a 10 inch (or 250mm) fan.
» 2XX = 4 inch fan (100mm)
» 3XX = 6 inch fan (150mm)
» 4XX = 8 inch fan (200mm)
Now practise spraying again, keeping the spray pattern the same size as the tip indicates.
For example, if using a 517 and your spray fan is 150mm, you are too close. If it’s 350mm, you are too far away.
Practise this with different tips if you have them.
